Axolotls & PCR Genetic Sex Sampling

Updated: Mar 14

The Lizzy’s Lotyls Difference: At Lizzy’s Lotyls, we believe informed keepers make the best caretakers—and that starts with science.

Sexing axolotls can be difficult, especially in juveniles or individuals that don’t show clear physical traits. That’s why we utilize PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) genetic sex sampling to determine sex accurately and responsibly.

Using a non-invasive slime coat swab and following the most humane standard operating procedures developed by Lizzy alongside of experienced veterinary professionals, DNA is collected and analyzed to identify genetic markers associated with sex. This method is safe, stress-minimized, and does not require surgery, blood collection, or tissue cutting. Our sampling methods were developed and refined with the assistance of a board certified veterinarian as well as with the support and assistance of some of the world's top reasearch and genomics professionals. We are currently still standardizing our processes with the goal of making them more widely available.

Why Lizzy’s Lotyls uses PCR sexing:

DNA-backed accuracy—no guesswork

Early sex determination, even in very young axolotls

Helps prevent accidental breeding/inbreeding while allowing for appropriate social housing

Ensures adopters receive honest information about their axolotl's sex

Supports ethical, responsible placement and breeding practices

When an axolotl from Lizzy’s Lotyls is labeled DNA-Proven Male or Female, you can trust that it’s backed by modern genetic science—not assumptions.

Because at Lizzy’s Lotyls, science and animal welfare come first.
