Exciting News: Raspberry Beret's Journey to His New Home
Updated: Aug 13

Raspberry Beret's Safe Arrival
Oh. My. Goodness! Yesterday, I received the wonderful news that our adult male axolotl, "Raspberry Beret," arrived safely in Coatesville, PA, from Marshfield, MA! We overnighted this 12-inch "monster" with ease. The new owners are already in love with him. And, he looks SO good!
I got to see photos of his GIANT tank setup just after he was acclimated. It made my day to learn how happy his human family of five is (now plus one amphibian)! Thanks for being such awesome clients!
The Importance of Proper Acclimation
Acclimating an axolotl is crucial for their health. When a new pet arrives, it’s important to introduce them to their new environment slowly. This helps reduce stress and allows them to adjust to the water conditions.
Steps for Successful Acclimation
Temperature Adjustment: Before introducing the axolotl to the tank, ensure the water temperature matches that of the transport bag.
Gradual Introduction: Slowly mix tank water into the transport bag over a period of time. This helps the axolotl adjust to the new water chemistry.
Monitoring Behavior: After release, keep an eye on the axolotl for signs of stress or discomfort.
Creating the Perfect Tank Environment
A well-set-up tank is essential for the health of your axolotl. Here are some key elements to consider:
Tank Size and Setup
Axolotls need ample space to thrive. A minimum of 20 gallons is recommended for one axolotl. Ensure the tank has:
Substrate: Use sand or bare bottom to prevent ingestion.
Hiding Spots: Include caves or plants for security.
Water Quality: Maintain clean, cool water with proper filtration.
Water Conditions
Axolotls prefer specific water conditions. Keep the temperature between 60°F and 68°F. Regularly check pH levels, aiming for a range of 6.5 to 7.5.
Feeding Your Axolotl
Feeding is another critical aspect of axolotl care. I recommend a varied diet to keep them healthy.
Recommended Foods
Worms: Nightcrawlers or red wigglers are excellent choices.
Pellets: High-quality axolotl pellets can provide balanced nutrition.
Live Food: Occasionally, you can offer live food like brine shrimp.
Health Monitoring
Regular health checks are vital. Look for signs of illness, such as changes in appetite or unusual swimming behavior.
Common Health Issues
Skin Problems: Look for lesions or discoloration.
Infections: Watch for swelling or lethargy.
Bloating: This can indicate digestive issues.
Conclusion
I am thrilled to hear about Raspberry Beret's new adventure. His journey to Coatesville is just the beginning. I hope he brings joy to his new family. If you are considering adding an axolotl to your home, remember to create a suitable environment and monitor their health closely.
